About

How it all started

Terri Whitlow is from Columbus, OH.  She was born in 1968, the third child of Mignonne and Clyde Whitlow.  Her mother was an Administrator at The Ohio State University and her father was a civilian working for the military at Rickenbacker Air Force Base.  At the age of 3, she began dancing Classical Ballet at the Grider Studio of Dance and by the age of 12 had earned a scholarship to The Dance Theatre of Harlem.

While perfecting her craft of dance, she also realized (around age 8) that she could SING!  She began working on her voice and eventually had aspirations of performing on the Broadway stages in New York.  She entered into numerous talent competitions where she was able to express herself with dance AND vocals thereby getting her chops.  As a result of the exposure, she was discovered by Bobby Taylor (Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers-Motown) and he became the first person to allow her to hear herself sing with real studio equipment!

He formed a group named “Fresh” and groomed her for performing on the “BIG STAGE”.

She then spent some time in New York, honing her skills in both areas, then returned to East High School where she entered into the East High School Gospel Choir.  Having been raised Episcopalian, she wasn't very familiar with Baptist songs and ways of singing.  Another love and skill-set was then born.  After graduating, she was discovered and signed to Warner Brother's Records by Benny Madina.  And while rehearsing with choreographer Otis Salid for the music video “Let's Get Busy”, he told her of a hot new director, Spike Lee, that was about to start shooting his 2nd movie “School Daze”.  She auditioned and landed the part of a “Jiggaboo” and suddenly acting, like in her earlier days of dreaming to be on Broadway, were reignited.  Shortly after the movie opened nationwide, she gave birth to her first child.

She went on to get married and have two more children.  Eight years later tragedy struck.  Her husband and father of her 3 children, was convicted of murder and her whole world got turned upside down!  She was forced to get on welfare to help her raise her children on her own.  She had to put all of her dreams and aspirations of music, dance and acting aside to work full time to provide for her family.  Then, around the time the children became teenagers, she got word of a new local band that was being formed.

She became an original member of Controversy Band and her love for music and entertainment was sparked up again.   She did well performing all around Ohio with Controversy Band, then the band was disbanded after 14 years.  She then became a member of her friend's band “Tia Stewart & The Groove Syndicate” and performed with her for two years.  Once she realized that she was now an “Empty Nester” with grandchildren, she decided she would move to Louisville, KY and finally start her own band with the help her friend Darius Towns.

Terri Whitlow & The Show was officially born!  Although she, like numerous other talent artists/musicians, has had a very tumultuous love affair with music, she STILL LOVES IT and in addition still has an undying fire for entertaining and making others happy.  One of her favorite quotes is: “If you do what you love for a living, you NEVER WORK a day in your life!”
